What do you think of the 2019 Oscars nominations announced?
What. The. Hell.
While I didn’t watch every single film of 2018 (sadly missing out on stuff like First Reformed, Roma, and Isle of Dogs), looking at that Oscar nominee list felt like a stab in the heart, made even worse by the fact that it was the first thing that I saw when I woke up.
While I never really cared about the Oscars before, this is the first time where I’m really pissed.
There are so many movies that deserve recognition for that talent and quality that hasn’t been seen in the entertainment industry in a long time (or perhaps never), so many films whose lack of presence at this year’s Awards Ceremony pissed so many people off.
Hereditary.
First Reformed.
Eighth Grade.
First Man.
While I only saw one of the above movies mentioned (that being Hereditary), I completely understand the pain and frustration that everyone else that saws those movies is feeling right now. Hell, I felt this same experience when the Academy didn’t nominate The LEGO Movie.
What really pisses me off is that this fucking movie got nominated for Best Picture.
Black Panther, whether you like it or not, does not deserve to be on the same list as anything involving great to decent movies such as The Favorite or even BlacKkKlansman; like I’ve said before:
Black Panther […] thinks it’s this grand, “woke” film with Shakespearean themes. While it looks like that on the surface, most of the time, it’s just a normal Marvel movie with the same bland cinematography, the same tame action, the same hit-or-miss humor, and the same Stan Lee cameo.
Hell, Infinity War (a movie that I don’t think was that great) was way better than Black Panther ... And both of them are just normal Marvel movies, nothing more and nothing less.
Adrian, how do we know you just don’t like Black Panther because you’re a racist bigot who doesn’t like black people?
[no really, I’ve gotten this type of response before]
Because there’s another movie that I think deserves Black Panther’s spot on that list, and that’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
While I wouldn’t describe myself as a progressive person (despite being an American PoC), I’ve mellowed out throughout the year where I’ll accept anything that’s not too preachy and has a good/great execution with a good/great story.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of those products with progressive ideals that’s actually really fucking great; while it was progressive like Black Panther, it actually had awesome art direction, a vibrant color palette, asskicking action and cinematography, and a wonderful cast of characters (even if some of them were underutilized). Unlike Black Panther, I believe it does deserve to contend with the likes of The Favourite (another movie that I really fucking liked this year) and BlacKkKlansman.
It’s so fucking disgusting that the Academy is only giving this movie one nomination and it’s stuck on a list with Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet simply because “it’s an animated cartoon movie for babies and couldn’t possibly be as important as Black Panther.”
Don’t believe me that the Academy doesn’t treat animation as seriously as live-action films? Here’s some stuff from Cartoon Brewthat shows anonymous Oscar voters revealing their “process” involving animated films:
Why do you think Disney wins every single year when it comes to animation? Because the Academy has absolutely no respect for anything that they don’t see as important or mature; they’re so pretentious, snobby, and clueless. It’s so gross.
According to the Academy, fuck films like Spider-Verse, The Dark Knight, Hereditary, and all of Stanley Kubrick’s movies; they’re obviously part of genres that are too beneath them (i.e. superheroes, horror, sci-fi). According to the Oscars, they’re nowhere near as “good” as Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody because they’re not as “important” enough.
The Academy is the ultimate symbol of pretentiousness in entertainment; they look down on everyone else while patting themselves on the back for being progressive and hip, while in reality they’re just a bunch of rich old people desperately looking for ways to get youngsters to watch their “ceremony.
