Consider this :
1999 Filmfare Awards
Best Supporting Actor
Salman Khan – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
- Arbaaz Khan – Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya
- Manoj Bajpai – Satya
- Naseeruddin Shah – China Gate
- Om Puri – Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha
………
This was the start of awards fixing in Bollywood. I dont think a lot of people might have noticed this, but it definitely started with the year 1999.
Before this, Filmfare awards were very credible and much awaited awards for all film lovers.
What happened to Filmfare in 1999 ?
Zee Cine Awards were introduced in 1998.
Please note : Salman Khan performed at the 1999 filmfare awards, dancing on all his hit songs.
Manoj Bajpayee got the critics best supporting actor but Salman Khan got the best supporting actor for his brilliant acting in KKHH .. lol … i know.
I have no idea what filmfare was thinking. But Zee Cine awards had arrived and was gaining popularity.
Awards functions like these are made for TV. The revenue comes from ad money. If there is no SRK or SK at the award function… no dance performances of the peoples favourite stars, what will be shown on TV ? U want the best stars to come at the award function…perform on stage… so u have enough content to sell to a tv channel. Channels then make money from the ads shown during commercial breaks. Obviously, u have to pay these to stars attend , host , dance etc.
Like someone mentioned above, the modus operandi is clear : give them an award and get a discount on their performance fees.
It wasnt always like this. I remember there was a time when the competition used to be so tough.
Consider the 31st Filmfare awards in 1984.
Sadashiv Amrapurkar beating the giants Amitabh Bacchan and Nasseruddin Shah to win the Best Supporting actor for Ardh Satya. The same year Shabana Azmi beating Sridevi ( Sadma ) to win best actress. And Naseeruddin beating Kamal Hassan , Om puri, Rajesh Khanna to win best actor for Masoom.
Consider the 29th Filmfare Awards in 1982.
Naseeruddin Shah beating Amitabh Bachchan( Laawaaris , Silsila ) , Kamal Hassan( Ek duje ke liye )Rajesh Khanna ( Dard ) to win best actor for Chakra. Smita Patil beating Rekha (Umaro Jaan) , Rati Agnihotri, Hema Malini ( Naseeb) , Rakhi ( Basera ) to win best actress for Chakra.
The 27th Filmfare Awards
Amol Palekar winning best actor for Golmaal beating Amitabh Bacchan ( Kala Pattar , Mr. Natwarlal ), Rajesh Khanna (Amar Deep) , Rishi Kapoor ( Sargam)
Just to get a nomination was big deal in those days. This only to prove that filmfare awards used to be credible and awards were given only to the worthy.
Amitabh Bacchan losing the award to Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Amol Palekar ? Can u image that happening now ?
If Manoj Bajpayee and Salman Khan were nominated in the same category during those days… do u think Salman had a chance ? ( He wouldnt have even been nominated, but this is just for the sake of argument !! )
Very soon after 1999, all kinds of Tom , Dick and Harry awards popped up on the scene. Award ceremonies became circuses and actors the clowns. Money became the driving force. Anyone and his dog could win an award. And the public became fools.
1999 was the year i stopped following and watching Filmfare awards.
And also Fardeen Khan won best male debut for Prem Aggan in 1999.
Thanks for reading .
Edit : This is in reply to a comment made by our friend Mr. Amit Jodha. He raised the point that less movies were released in the 80s and 90s so it was easier to get noticed and everyone had a chance to win. Now, more movies are released so its hard to get noticed.
Although i fail to understand the logic behind this reasoning. A good movie and good performances will always stand out even if 1000 movies are released in a year. And shouldnt that make it harder to get awards ? How come it became easier ? I believe Salman Khan got a best actor (not filmfare) award for Dabanng as well. Why and how ? (Someone else should do a little research and find out what happened that year. )
Anyway, i decided to take it further and do a little research from from Mr. Amits point of view.
Since i had mentioned filmfare awards 1999 and 1984 above , i did a research on what happened in the world of Bollywood in the years 1998 and 1983. ( Movies are nominated for awards the following year of their release). And it makes sense because only filmfare awards existed in 1984 and 1999. ( Zee cine had just arrived in 1998 ).
The results have surprised me.

Analysis : A lot to say. KKHH was the biggest commercial success and made a clean sweep of the awards in all the popular categories. Ajay Devgan did not win best actor for Zakhm and Salman khan was nominated for best actor. Salman Khan actually got a nomination for best actor for PKDK. Not much to talk about content wise. Stil the case today.

99 Movies were released that year.
Analysis : I was so so surprised what i came across. The biggest commercial success that year was Coolie. Amitabh Bacchan not even nominated for an award. Infact, no popular award given to any of the biggest commercial successes that year. Hell, they were not even nominated except for Betaab !!
And consider this :
Amitabh Bacchan had 5 releases that year. Coolie, Nastik, Mahan and Pukar. He had a supporting role in Andha Kanoon. Coolie was the biggest commercial success of 1983 and Nastik was also a commercial hit.
No awards or nominations for Amitabh Bacchan that year for best actor. Only 1 nomination and that too for best supporting actor, which he didnt win.
Other movies released that year : Anil Kapoor ( Woh 7 din ) , Dilip Kumar ( Mazdoor ) , Rajesh Khanna ( Souten ) , Naseeruddin ( Jaane bhi Do Yaaron ) , Farooque Shaikh ( Katha ) etc etc etc.
I am actually speechless at the amount of talent in all these movies. These are not run of the mill Bollywood movies. This is some serious content. And its only a small part of the list.
Conclusion :
Its crystal clear. In 1983 we can see talent is being rewarded. Amitabh Bacchan starred in 4 movies as the leading actor. The biggest commercial success of 1983 belonged to him. But niether he nor the movie ( Coolie ) received any awards. We are talking about the superstar of the millennium. Infact, no awards for any commercial success. Not even nominated. Did Sadashiv and Naseeruddin buy the awards ? Lol. I dont think so.
1998. SRK had 2 releases, he was nominated for one release and he won best actor for that one release. KKHH was also the biggest commercial success of 1998. All the awards went to that movie. Movies like Satya, Zakhm and 1947 Earth were sidelined. I don’t believe in the critics bullshit. It doesnt mean anything. When actors like Dilip Kumar , Amitabh bacchan , Jackie Shroff , Anil Kapoor , Mithun were not even getting a nomination in 1983 ….someone like Salman Khan was being nominated for best actor in 1998 and winning in the best supporting actor category.
Unbelievable.
The same year Ajay Devgan won the National Award for best actor for Zakhm.

Why i say 1999 was the year that changed it all, is because all these years up till 1998, Filmfare awards were the only awards in the country. And as u can see, they had a reputation of being awarded to the best of the best. I believe they had a strict protocol which they adhered to uncompromisingly. Commercial success of a movie hardly mattered. U didnt have Sadashiv , Naseer , Amol dancing on the stage. But the same awards destroyed their own legacy in 1999 to compete with the dud new age awards . Its sad.
The transformation was so in your face that u could not ignore it. There might have been incidents of more deserving actors missing out in a year before 1999 but it never turned into a policy. The credibility was still intact.
Kindly note : More movies were released in 1983 compared to 1998.
This makes me so depressed. I have nothing more to say.
Thanks for reading everyone.
